Roanoke Island carries the county's legal weight: Dare County hears its cases at the Justice Center in Manteo, and the Clerk of Superior Court there keeps every criminal, traffic, civil, estate, and small-claims file. No beach town runs its own court. A speeding ticket from Nags Head and a felony case follow the same trail, indexed by the statewide online search under a name, case number, or citation number. Separate District and Superior Court calendars list upcoming sessions, splitting the Dare County court docket by division. The Justice Center's public terminals and the clerk's counter cover copies, older files, and anything a remote search cannot open.

Dare County's Unified Clerk Docket Path

One office holds nearly every Dare County court record. The elected Dare County Clerk of Superior Court keeps the files, dockets, indexes, and records for Superior Court, District Court, and every major case type. That includes criminal cases, traffic and infraction matters, civil suits, estates, special proceedings, and clerk matters. Why does one office matter? A Dare case can shift type or level. The same clerk route still works. The courtroom hearing the matter may differ. Inside the Dare County Justice Center, the Criminal Division on the second floor keeps felony, misdemeanor, and traffic records, while civil, estate, and clerk matters run through the same clerk system.

Do not send court-record requests through Dare County's general public-records route. That route serves other county records. Dare County directs requests for divorce judgments, traffic records, criminal files, estate files, and civil documents to the clerk, whose office holds the underlying case file.

Inside a Dare County Court Docket

A Portal result for a Dare County case is a Case Summary, not a scanned docket sheet. The layout tells you what was filed. It also shows where the case sits and whether a hearing is ahead. Case Events form the working Register of Actions. Read the newest event and hearing before drawing any conclusion from an older entry. Civil summaries can list a cause of action. Criminal summaries can add case and charge information.

Case numberEnterprise Justice identifies year, case-type letters, six-digit sequence, and county identifier, such as 21CR000003-910.
Case informationShows core case details, filing context, and status where public.
Assignment informationShows court or judicial assignment information available in the Case Summary.
Party informationLists public participants and their roles in the case.
Case EventsChronological entries form the functional Dare County Register of Actions.
Hearings and dispositionShows scheduled public settings and an outcome when the matter has been resolved.

The detailed categories come from Judicial Branch Portal guidance. Public documents may open one at a time in that view. A document view is not a certified copy, though. Restricted, sealed, or confidential material does not become public just because a case name is known.

Dare County Portal Search Fields

Smart Search works best when it starts simple. The main field takes a case number or a party name. Official guidance also allows business-name and citation-number searches. Dare County can be set as a location filter. Run the broadest lawful search that finds the matter, then add a public case type, status, or date range only if the results get noisy. Advanced criteria never unlock cases that state law or court restrictions make nonpublic.

Courts That Keep Dockets in Dare County

Dare County court dockets follow North Carolina's trial-court divisions. There are no separate city courts. Superior Court handles felonies, civil claims over $25,000, and eligible appeals. District Court takes misdemeanors, traffic and infractions, family cases, and civil matters of $25,000 or less. Magistrates handle preliminary criminal work. They also hear small claims within their authority. The clerk keeps probate and special-proceeding duties, so estates never route to the Register of Deeds.

Dare County Case Number Clues

A case number is often the fastest key into a Dare County docket. Enterprise Justice builds it in four parts. You get a two-digit year first, then case-type letters and a six-digit sequence. A three-digit county identifier closes it out. The official example is 21CR000003-910. A partial-number wildcard needs at least four characters before the asterisk. A name wildcard calls for three last-name characters and one first-name character before the asterisk.

The letters offer a first clue. CR marks a case with at least one criminal offense. IF marks an infraction-only case. State activity reports use CRS for Superior Court criminal matters. These labels mark pathways, not outcomes. For current status, the Case Summary and its latest event still beat the letter code.

Case Event
A dated action in the Case Summary chronology, such as a filing, hearing, order, or disposition.
Continuance
A postponement of a setting. It does not mean the Dare case was dismissed.
Disposition
The outcome or status recorded when a charge or claim is resolved.
Setting
A scheduled court event that may list a date, time, court, or location.

Dare County Court Date Sources

Dare County offers three good ways to check a court date. Each one answers a different question. Case Summary lists case events and hearings. Portal Search Hearings goes further, letting you look up current settings by case number, party or business name, attorney details, judicial officer, or courtroom. For official session documents, turn to the Civil and Criminal Calendars service. It posts Dare sessions split into District and Superior. Keep one caution in mind. A session PDF is context only, and it cannot guarantee your setting stands after a continuance or a court closure.

Once you have the case, work through the Dare County court dates resource for the full confirmation sequence. Start with the newest Portal hearing, then Search Hearings, then the matching Dare civil or criminal session document. If those sources disagree, call the Dare Clerk. Local Criminal and Traffic guidance is clear that the clerk can change a date only in limited circumstances, and a judge may have to rule on a continuance first.

Dare County Court Docket Copy Fees

The Portal can point you to a Dare case. Official documents come only from the clerk. Dare County lists copy prices separately. A regular copy, a certified copy, and an exemplified copy each serve a different purpose. None of those amounts is a charge to view the Portal. Before you request a copy, confirm the document type and total page count with the clerk, especially if the filing is old, restricted, or sits in a paper file.

Dare clerk servicePublished fee
Regular court copy$2.00 first page, then $0.25 per additional page.
Certified copy$3.00 first page, then $0.25 per additional page.
Exemplified copy$10.00 first page, then $0.25 per additional page.
Transcript of judgment$10.00.

Note: The Dare County schedule covers clerk copies and certifications only. It is not a paid public search product.

Public Access to Court Dockets

North Carolina court-record rules and public-record law govern access to Dare County court records. Clerks keep the records, files, dockets, and indexes. The public may inspect them unless a law or restriction closes them. Portal information is practical for a Dare search. It does not lift the limits on juvenile, adoption, sealed, confidential, unreturned-warrant, or other protected material.

Key rules for Dare County records:

G.S. 7A-109 requires clerk recordkeeping and generally permits public inspection, with authority for remote access arrangements.

G.S. 132-1 defines public records and favors copies at free or minimal cost unless another law provides otherwise.

G.S. 15A-151 limits disclosure of confidential expunction files.

G.S. 7A-243 sets the ordinary $25,000 civil division threshold that helps identify the trial-court path.

Dare County Portal Limits and Files

A blank result does not mean the case is gone. Portal access leaves out sealed and confidential cases, documents, and data. Paper files happen too. A public record may sit in one, show up with no viewable document, or require clerk help when a large Portal document returns Error Code 141011. The Judicial Branch has advice for anyone who hits that error. Ask the clerk about splitting the file for handling.

The Dare Clerk's terminals are the local fallback that matters. The clerk page lists VCAP civil case, judgment, and lien searching on office terminals. Criminal records are open on the public computer system. State records guidance also recognizes clerk-office paper files. An official copy still requires the clerk. The NCAOC public-record form covers Judicial Branch agency records, not the Dare case file.

Docket Records at the Clerk's Office

The Dare County Clerk of Superior Court holds the official Dare court case file. Portal information can help you spot the file, the event, and the court date. A court-certified document comes from the clerk alone. Regular, certified, and exemplified copies each carry different published prices. A public record may not be fully online. The clerk can then point you to a public terminal or a paper file.

Call (252) 475-5200 or come to the Justice Center counter with any Dare court-file question. The Judicial Branch public-record request form is different. It addresses existing agency records. It does not replace the county clerk's hold on an individual Dare criminal, civil, traffic, estate, or special-proceeding file. For a document needing certification, or a public file you must inspect in person, the clerk's office is the place to ask.

Dare County Treatment Court Dockets

North Carolina lists Dare in District 1. The county is an Adult Treatment Court or Recovery Court location. The program serves eligible people on an intermediate-punishment path. They may face substance-use, mental-health, or co-occurring-disorder concerns. The program does not create a separate public Dare County docket portal. The underlying criminal case may still be public. When it is, the ordinary routes work. Try the case number, Case Summary, calendar, and clerk.

Program participation and treatment details may carry access limits. A public event should never be read as a full account of a participant's status. The state Adult Treatment Court information lays out the broader program framework. The Dare docket route stays tied to the case record and its public-access limits.

Dare County Justice Center Dockets

Dare County court business now runs through the Justice Center in Manteo. It is not the Old Dare County Courthouse. The old building belongs to the county. It serves arts uses today. At the Justice Center, everything sits in one place. You will find Superior Court, District Court, the magistrates, the courtrooms, and the clerk counter that handles records. One clerk and court center serves a long coastal county, so that single hub matters. It also serves a seasonal crowd. That crowd is far larger than the year-round population of the Outer Banks.

The Dare County Judicial Branch landing page gathers the courthouse, clerk, Portal, calendar, payment, local-rule, and service links. All sit in one spot. Check the official contact information there before a visit, and plan for court-security rules. Phones stay out of courtrooms. The Sheriff publishes restrictions on bags, weapons, and similar items.

The Dare jury assembly room sits on the second floor too. That is why county materials list one Justice Center address for so many court functions. A criminal docket search, a civil paper-file request, a magistrate matter, and jury instructions all share the same building. Each follows different docket and clerk procedures. Knowing that saves a trip.

Dare County Court Dockets by City

Dare County's five largest incorporated towns all use the same state-court path. That path covers criminal, traffic, and other court-bound cases. No town here runs its own municipal court docket. A citation or criminal case may start with town police. It still lands in Dare District Court, with the Dare Clerk, the eCourts Portal, and the right Dare calendar channel. The town pages keep local contact facts clear while separating municipal services from court records. A docket search starts in the right place every time.
